Improve your fitness. Preserve your health.

Don’t let these 5 limiting beliefs stop you from eating real food

February 12, 2015 by Carolyn Coffin

Perhaps the idea of eating real food resonates with you. You understand how much better you could feel by ditching the frozen dinners, packaged food, and empty calorie beverages from your diet. You’ve researched a program that you’re happy with. Maybe you’ve even found a meal plan that removes the guesswork and tells you exactly what to eat (check out our free one here).

You are committed to giving it an honest try for thirty days.

The only problem is that you haven’t stopped to consider your underlying beliefs that give rise to the way you’re eating right now. Every single one of our thoughts and behaviours stem from our beliefs.

The only way around is through. Examining your beliefs is where it’s at.

  • Maybe you consume processed food out of pure necessity because your life is hectic and over-scheduled.
  • Maybe you believe that eating real food will be an added expense you just can’t afford right now. (Or you’re not convinced the added expense is even worth it.)
  • Maybe you’ve been on and off so many diets during your life that you just fundamentally don’t believe you have what it takes to stick to this one.

All of these are examples of limiting beliefs that will ultimately prevent you from eating real food long-term. And there are many, many more!

It can be tempting to blame the “diet” for not working, when really it stemmed more from failing to adjust your beliefs.

Consider these five insidious limiting beliefs that are so common many of us have ceased to question their validity:

  1. Eat fat makes us fat
  2. Balancing our calories in and calories out is the best weight maintenance strategy
  3. Eating 5-6 small meals a day is the best way to keep blood sugar levels stable
  4. Dairy is the best source of calcium
  5. Whole grains are the best source of fiber

And on. And on. And on.

Instead of searching for the next fad diet, we’d be far better off holding a mirror to our current thoughts and behaviours, and considering what beliefs are driving them. Awareness is more than half the battle!

So go ahead. Look in the mirror and share one limiting belief with us. Bonus points for including your plan to overcome it.
