If you have failed at diets in the past, you’ve done nothing wrong and everything right.
If you feel lazy and hungry most of the time, it’s the product of four billion years of evolution.
If you are fat, sick and broken … you are a success story!
According to Robb Wolf in his Paleof(x) talk called It’s not your fault: On novelty and evolutionary biology, he explained how the forces that successfully shaped our species are working against us in modern life.
Our genome took shape under very different conditions than we live in today.
- There weren’t 50,000 food products neatly stacked on store shelves with 11,000 new ones added every year.
- Daily physical activity was required for survival and food scarcity was a very real possibility.
In order to make appreciable headway on our health goals then, it is imperative that we embrace this fact instead of trying to work against it. The online Eat Real Food Academy course does exactly that – it teaches you to work with your physiology instead of against it.
‘Eat less and exercise more’ is destined for failure
We are designed to eat as much as possible and be as lazy as possible, which directly opposes the standard advice to eat as little as possible while being as active as possible.
The reason most people fail at calorie restrictive diets is because they have failure built right into them!
Of our current ‘eat less and move more’ dogma, Wolf says, “It works in metabolic wards but sucks ass in real life.”
The Eat Real Food Academy difference
Our top priority at the Eat Real Food Academy is to educate our clients about a healthy way of eating they can sustain for life. This begins with acknowledging how our biological programming clashes with today’s unforgiving food landscape. Only then can we get down to the business of what to eat and why.
As much as we’d like to believe in the well-accepted “everything in moderation” advice, we encourage our clients to get brutally honest about whether this is a realistic strategy for them.
Are you an abstainer or a moderator? Be honest.
Most of our clients are surprised to discover that abstaining from trigger foods is actually easier and more effective at overcoming food cravings and energy crashes than eating them in moderation. They often tell us that their health journey really began the moment they gave themselves permission to abstain from the tempting foods that don’t support their health. And the bonus, they tell us, is how much delicious and nutritious food is still fair game to eat.
Of course we’re told that giving up any food group is extreme and unnecessary, or a sign of disordered eating such as orthorexia. Robb Wolf’s response sums it up better than I ever could. He says, “Why is it that the only food taboo in our culture now is eating well?”
