Do you own a scale? How often do you weigh yourself? How would you describe your relationship with the bathroom scale?
I used to weigh myself daily until I realized how negatively it was impacting me (and those around me!). One “bad” weigh in could make for an entirely bad day.
Can you relate?
I let go of my scale almost a year ago and I’ve never felt so free. My new “scale” is answering the following three questions.
- Do my clothes fit?
- Do I feel well in my everyday activities?
- Do I perform well in athletic endeavours?
Through much trial and error – and many mediocre days if the scale showed an unfavourable number – I came to realize that looking well, feeling well, and performing well is all that really matters to me. And I could choose to focus on these metrics instead of one tiny number that only reflects my relationship with gravity.
Bottom line: If the scale is getting you down, try letting it go and designing your own metrics instead.
Now I want to hear from you. Do you have a healthy relationship with your scale? If not, what could you measure instead? Please share in the comments below so we can all find more meaningful and empowering ways to measure health.
