The third way in which we are conditioned is by specific incidents.

What did you experience when you were young around health, fitness, and well-being? These experiences are extremely important because they shape the beliefs – or rather, the illusions – you now live by.

A woman who attended one of my workshops was having a really hard time kicking her sweet tooth to the curb. When we dug a little deeper, she revealed that her family had a longstanding tradition of sitting down together each evening to talk about their days. The second way we are conditioned is called modeling.

What were your parents/guardians like in the arena of health, fitness and well-being when you were growing up? Did they take care of themselves? Did they spend time cooking healthy meals or was it frozen pizzas and processed food for dinner? Were they physically active or were they couch potatoes? Did they tend to engage in restorative / self-care practices, or destructive ones? (e.g. smoking, abusing alcohol) Did they enjoy vibrant health or did it always elude them?

Why is this information important? You’ve probably heard the saying “Monkey see, monkey do.” Well, humans are the same. As kids, so much of what we learn comes from what was modeled to us. [Read more…]

Did you ever hear phrases like I’d do anything to lose 10lbs…except eat healthy foods and work out, I don’t run unless someone is chasing me, I have bad genes – my parent(s) died young so I will too, I don’t have enough willpower/discipline to stick to a diet, healthy people are boring, no rest for the wicked, I’ll sleep when I’m dead, I don’t have time to exercise and take care of myself, I’d rather enjoy my life than be regimented with my food and exercise, I workout so I can eat whatever I want, or exercising will wear out my joints?
